London, 03 May 2018 – Agriculture is a key, fast-growing industry in Africa – and Parrot, the leading European drone group, is offering business solutions, covering drones and software, to professionals in this business sector.

Parrot-AIRINOV teamed up with the Technical Centre for Agricultural and Rural Cooperation (CTA), created by the European Union, to help tech start-ups develop precision agriculture all over the African continent, enabling farmers to improve their ROI while respecting the environment.

There is a general consensus that smallholder farming needs to become more productive, more sustainable and more profitable. Drone-based systems and services can contribute towards these goals by bringing some of the tools of precision agriculture to producers, which include large and medium-scale holdings and associations of small-scale farmers growing the same crop in contiguous areas.

Typically, drone services are provided by entrepreneurs who invest in the equipment, acquire the skills to use it, conduct or sub-contract data analysis, interpret the findings and advise their customers.

Drones can help increase the return-on-investment (ROI) and create new knowledge-intensive employment opportunities in rural areas, offering educated rural youth an alternative to migration.

Recognising the opportunities provided by drones, in 2016 CTA partnered with Parrot-AIRINOV to train and equip ICT start-ups in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ghana, Nigeria, Rwanda, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and a government institution in Jamaica in acquiring the capacity to deliver drone-based services.

With the assistance of Parrot-AIRINOV, CTA organised a series of activities including training on the operation of drones and mounted multispectral sensors, understanding of safety and privacy principles and regulations, management and processing of remote sensed data, development of business plans and networking opportunities. In addition, CTA provided some financial support for the acquisition of necessary equipment. The training events took place in Paris in March and November 2017.

Thanks to the presence of a competent and entrepreneurial UAS operator in Rwanda (Charis Unmanned Aerial Services), a very enabling environment (strong government support to digital innovations) and the possibility of upscaling UAS service operations in Eastern Africa, CTA and Parrot-AIRINOV pooled resources and supported a project aimed at calibrating of the diagnostic model for nitrogen fertilization on wheat in Rwanda.

On 26 January 2018, by issuing Decision EX.CL/Dec. 986-1007 (XXXII), the Executive Council of the African Union (AU), requested the AU and Member States to harness drones for agriculture as a selected emerging technology of relevance for the development of the African continent. In line with this continent-wide policy recommendation, CTA decided to support an increase in the number of supported drone operators and countries covered across Africa.

In this context, CTA has launched a 2018-2019 project focusing on Sub-Saharan Africa, known as “Transforming African agriculture: Eyes in the Sky, Smart Techs on the Ground”. Parrot partnered in the project by offering CTA-supported drone operators the opportunity to purchase equipment (Parrot Disco-Pro Ag or Parrot Bluegrass) at discounted rates.

Over a two-year time span, the “Eyes in the Sky” Project is meant to result in approximately 30 established business-oriented and sustainable African drone service providers, most run by young entrepreneurs in African countries where enabling legislation is in place. The enterprises will offer a range of drone-based advisory services including real-time advice to farmers.

This list is established by the INPI by counting the number of patent requests done nationally at the INPI and published in 2017. Parrot Bebop-Pro Thermal: a reliable and powerful quadcopter

Parrot Bebop-Pro Thermal is based on the all new Parrot Bebop 2 Power quadcopter, which has been modified to benefit industry professionals.

Lightweight and compact, the quadcopter can be easily carried on any site, and is ready to operate in just minutes. Thanks to the Parrot Skycontroller 2’s long range, the pilot can control the drone with precision from a safe distance from a hot spot without any risk[1].

Images are captured by the Parrot Bebop-Pro’s Full HD 14MP front camera and the thermal camera positioned in a dedicated module at the back of the drone.

 

Parrot FreeFlight Thermal: Analyses and reveals thermal contrasts

In addition to the Parrot Bebop-Pro Thermal settings and flight parameters, the FreeFlight Thermal app streams images from both cameras on the quadcopter (front and thermal) directly to a connected tablet. At any time during flight, the pilot can switch from a thermal image to a HD image, record video footage, and store captured content directly to the drone’s 32GB memory.

·         Thermal imaging

Lightweight (36.5 gr) and compact, the thermal camera is equipped with two sensors. This includes a RGB sensor (1440x1080p), capturing exactly what the drone can see, and a thermal sensor (160x120p), which measures temperature differences.

Data from both sensors are combined by the FreeFlight Thermal app to create precise and detailed images. Edge surrounding details are highlighted in the image, and areas with thermal loss or hot spots can be immediately identified. Touching one part of the connected tablet’s screen will show the estimated thermal temperature captured by the sensors.

 

3 imaging thermal setting modes* are available:

·         Standard: Thermal images, from red (160°) to blue (10°) scale are displayed, for quick identification of thermal losses.

·         Dynamic: The thermal colour scale is adapted to the ambient temperature. This allows the user to benefit from an accurate view of the thermal losses. High temperatures are highlighted in red, and cooler temperatures are displayed in blue.

·         Hotspot: This mode is adapted for fire safety professionals and emergency search and rescue specialists. Only the highest temperatures recorded are highlighted and combined with the RGB image.

*Users can play video recorded using another colour scale setting and export them in a standard video format.

·         Visual inspection

The Full HD 14MPx front facing stabilised camera of the Parrot Bebop-Pro Thermal enables a visual inspection of a building, and lets the pilot to obtain videos and pictures to understand the condition of a building. Files can be saved and used to provide evidence of a building’s damage and estimate costs.

Parrot partnered with the research group of Dr. Todd Dawson, faculty at the University of California, Berkeley, to promote innovation and the use of drone technology in measuring and monitoring forest ecosystems. The project took a unique approach in studying the architecture and hydraulics, or how water flows, through the massive sequoia trees. The goal being to better understand how individual sequoias have survived for centuries and how they will continue to survive in the future under a changing climate.

NEW YORK — PowerUp Toys announced the release of the Powerup FPV, the world’s first Smartphone-Controlled paper airplane with a video camera and first-person view. PowerUp FPV lets you experience flight as if you were sitting in the cockpit of your very own paper airplane.
